Here's my two cent worth on "In
Blue"
The Corrs after 2 successful albums, not including
Unplugged, haven't lost their touch in capturing rhythm that is
both catchy and radio friendly.
I have to say "In Blue" is an album that truly reflected
who they really are lyrically. The album is full of songs that speak
about their lives advertisement thoughts. It is definitely their
most sincere album to date.
Starting from "No More Cry". By now everyone knows it is a special
song to The Corrs, written by Caroline and Andrea for their daddy
telling him to believe in their departed mammy's love.
And "Hurt Before", Andrea is baring her heart and
soul to the world about how her heart was hurt before and there
is a fear of being hurt again although she is trying to break free
from that fear and find new love.
There are other songs on "In Blue" that I think
they are singing about themselves but I'll leave that to the later
part.
Musically, yes it is true that the album is more
poppy now. But I wouldn't consider them having lost their Celtic
sounds. Yes, it's less obvious on this album but they did manage
to slip in bits and pieces of Celtic sounds in some songs like "All
In A Day", Rain, "Hurt Before" etc.
Of course "Rebel Heart" is the most Celtic sounding
piece on the album. I'm glad they kept their tradition of having
at least one instrumental piece on each album. "Rebel Heart" is
now my favorite instrumental piece from The Corrs and it sums up
"In Blue" so appropriately. The piece expresses sadness and yet
carries hints of optimistic. Fans of Andrea's tin whistle will also
be delighted, as it is, I think, the only piece where the tin whistle
is used. This is the also the only disappointment I have on this
album.
Like I said previously, I don't look at their change
in music style as selling out to their Celtic sounds, in order to
break into the American market. I see it as more of a musical experiment
to try out new sounds, moving forward musically and not sticking
to the same formula and becoming stagnant.
Listen carefully to what Andrea is singing. Understand
the songs. They are what I called "Corrism" - the kind of materials
you would expect The Corrs to come out with.
In "In Blue", other than sounding more poppy and
less Celtic, other factors remain pretty much the same. The whole
album is about love. Being in love, out of love, or longing for
love.
If these are the kind of music you like, "In Blue"
is not going to disappoint you. The Corrs as always have a great
sense of rhythm that appeals to listeners.
What set The Corrs apart from the rest of the world
has to be Sharon's violin and Andrea's angelic voice and tin whistle
and their beautiful and touching love songs. Unfortunately the tin
whistle is only used once in "Rebel Heart" and Sharon's violin is
not used as often, or at least as clearly distinguishable from the
rest of the instruments, as FNF and TOC.
But "In Blue" is definitely the most sincere album
so far, filled with songs about themselves and written so beautifully
that you'll be touched.
If you are interested, I've done a review
of some of my fav songs on "In Blue".
